It's time for the PlayNow Poker Championship. The five-day poker festival kicks off at Winnipeg's Club Regent Casino tonight with a multi-table satellite night on Wednesday night where players compete for entry into the $600 NLHE on Thursday, and Saturday's $1,100 Main Event. Last year there was more than $450,000 in prizes awarded across the four paying events.
The Club Regent Casino is Winnipeg's premier gaming spot, and the custom poker room downstairs has plenty of space for tournament and cash action. The 'tropical island' themed interior design gives the whole place a Vegas feel which just adds to the fun atmosphere.

As usual for the fall event, the poker action is running alongside Casinos of Winnipeg's promotion of the Banjo Bowl, the classic CFL rivalry between the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. There will be a Blue Bomber themed giveaway that includes a VIP experience at the September 27 Blue Bombers game versus Hamilton Tiger Cats on Thursday, as well as a Banjo Bowl party that includes appearances from the Blue Bomber Cheer Team and team mascots during the Friday night bounty event.
Rick Blom was the player last year who took down the big prize. There was almost $60,000 up top for the $1,100 Main Event and Blom went on a run of cards during the final two tables. His run started when he spiked a jack for a set against the pocket aces of his opponent, and followed that up a few orbits later cracking the nut-flush with a runner-runner full house using the same pocket jacks hand. From there, he ran over the remaining players, and collected just under $60,000 for his efforts.
Arian Alemzadeh & Dylan Ellis also put on a show in the $600 NLHE event last year, amassing the majority of the chips between them by the time the final five players returned for Day 2. They ended up heads-up and battled for more than half an hour before they finally decided to chop up the prize pool. Alemzadeh went on to take the title, but Ellis came right back and took down first place in the $300 Bounty later the same day.
