Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney's surprise return to English football has been criticised for being bankrolled by bookmaker 32Red, via a new sponsorship deal and marketing execution.

England's top goalscorer, now 33, served a one year stint in the MLS with DC United. This week he announced he will join Championship side Derby County in January, where he will adopt the 32 shirt in tribute to the club's lead sponsor, 32Red.

The buzzworthy signing of the striker has been subsidised by 32Red via a record-breaking sponsorship deal. Rooney will be paid five times the average wage in England's second tier, at £90,000 a week. The player/coach is expected to bring a new level of attention to the sponsor. Immediately the hashtag #WR32 trended, fuelled by the surprising nature of Rooney's US exodus.

Mel Morris, Derby Country owner, said: 'The commercial opportunities this creates are widespread and significant... on the back of Wayne joining the club, we have just been offered a record-breaking sponsorship deal with our principal shirt sponsor, 32Red.”

With gambling on football worth an estimated £1.4bn a year in the UK, the deal is a mere drop in the ocean. But the nature of the integration between the bookmaker and England's top-scoring striker was criticised by some days after gambling addiction awareness slogan 'When The Fun Stops Stop' was found not to dissuade gamblers.

Richard Gillis, journalist, marketer and owner of Unofficial Partner, told The Drum: 'I’m not sure that gambling addiction is as funny as marketing people seem to think. And in terms of the sophistication of their marketing messages, this lot make Paddy Power sound like Stephen Fry.

'There’s two things happening in the betting market: tightening advertising legislation in the UK and the opening up of sports betting in America. So, it’s all about playing nice with voluntary advertising codes on one hand and making as much noise as possible on the other.'

Football sponsorships help online bookmakers to differentiate themselves in the real world and build trust with punters. He concluded: 'The normalisation of gambling might be football's defining marketing legacy of the last twenty years.'

Richard Caborn, a former government minister who was a key figure in the 2005 Gambling Act, told The Telegraph: 'It's not very clever this – it all seems a bit crass.'

He said that Rooney, as a father, should know his close association with the bookmaker is 'not the brightest' move and hinted that it sets a bad example for young people who look up to him. 'The gambling companies need to be doing themselves favours at the moment, but this is not going to go down well with football authorities or the government.'

One tweet shows just how much brand exposure 32Red expects from the deal upon Rooney's move in January 2020.

But the cash injection raises questions of whether the club can meet the EFL's financial fair play rules. BBC Sport reporter Andrew Aloia wrote that the Ex-England captain's deal raises questions about 'football's links to gambling.'

Football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley, told Aloia: 'There is a big moral issue with gambling at the minute... the ethical issues, especially with the wider societal problems with gambling, has led to a lot of talk about it.'

Just weeks ago Paddy Power 'unsponsored' Brighton, Huddersfield and Motherwell to ironically shine a spotlight on the intrusive nature of gambling in the sport.

Earlier this year, The Drum tried to engage every Premier League side about the gambling problem. Brighton & Hove Albion, which doesn’t have any betting partnerships, was the only eager respondent.

In the 19/20 season, only three Premier League sides have evaded adopting a bookmaker sponsor.

Today is a sad day. For several years, 32Red Casino (32red.com) were recommended right here at RouletteStrategy.net as one of the best online casinos.

They are listed on the London stock exchange, they’ve won numerous industry awards since their inception in 2003 and they payout within 24 hours. They tick all the boxes for a great casino (we’ve never had any problems with the casino) so we take no pleasure in writing about how our relationship with them has turned sour to the point where we can no longer recommend them.

How It All Went Wrong

Red32 Casino

We had an advertiser account with 32Red which is standard practice in this industry and we were paid for the players we sent them. We recommended 32Red because they were, and still are, one of the best casinos for roulette. It’s the same with Betfair and Paddy Power. We could make more money working with different casinos but we’re only interested in promoting casinos that are the best fit for our readers.

Over the years, we sent a lot of custom 32Red’s way so it came as quite a shock when we tried to login to our advertising account one day to find that it had been locked. To make matters worse, they didn’t even send us a courtesy email to tell us they’d done it – they literally just removed our account with no explanation.

By locking our account, 32Red have robbed us of any potential money we’re owed on the players we’ve sent them in the past. We would not go so far as to say that 32Red is a scam because overall it is still a very good casino that many players love, but this shoddy treatment from their advertising department leaves us feeling like we’ve been ripped off. We certainly can’t recommend them anymore. Despite that, here’s what you can expect from their casino.

Roulette at 32Red

Unlike the majority of casinos recommended on this website which run on Playtech software, 32Red run on a platform called Microgaming. It has long been our belief that Microgaming roulette games are not a match for Playtech and as a result, 32Red can’t match their Playtech rivals even though they are the best Microgaming casino.

In total, you get 9 games to choose from plus the live dealer games. Both European and French roulette come in either a “normal” or a “gold” version and it’s the same story at most other Microgaming casinos as well.

We strongly recommend you avoid the normal games because to put it bluntly, they are pretty awful. You don’t have the option of a free spin and the graphics are terrible; you can’t even see the ball land in one of the pockets, it just suddenly stops.

The gold games are much better because you do get free spins and the graphics are a very clear upgrade, although in our opinion, still not a match for Playtech’s premier games which you can try out yourself in our free section.

The table limits vary from one game to another and the best one to go for is European Roulette Gold which has limits of £1 – £2000 for Red/Black which is a much better spread than the other games. Click on the image to the right to see a full size screenshot of this game.

The “normal” European game has minimum bet of £5 on all bets, including single numbers, and a maximum of £1000 for Red/Black which isn’t a very kind spread at all.

Then there’s a “European Roulette Gold High Limit” which has exactly the same £2000 maximum as the standard gold game, but they’ve jacked the minimum bet up to a whopping £10 so it’s a completely pointless game to play.

The French Roulette Gold game has table limits of just £1 – £80 for Red/Black and £1 – £10 for straight up bets which again, isn’t a very kind spread. You will find much better table limits at either Betfair or William Hill, both of whom have a 10p minimum and a higher maximum as well.

Blackjack at 32Red

The blackjack lobby is much better than the roulette one and you get a wide range to choose from – 47 in total. Here are just some of the variations you will find; European, Spanish, Pontoon, Classic, Atlantic City, Vegas Downtown, Double Exposure (see both of the dealer’s cards) and Perfect Pairs.

The reason why you get so many games to choose from is because you’ve got the above variations, often in “normal” and “gold” just like roulette, then there are several high limit games in there as well.

Here are the table limits that you will find:

Red32 Casino

£1 – £200

£2 – £200

£5 – £200

£100 – £5000 (high limit games).

Unfortunately, the table limits are not listed in the lobby and you need to click on each game individually to find out the limits. Also, not many of the games have the minimum bet of £1 – most have a minimum bet of £5. One of the few games that does have the £1 minimum is “High Streak European Blackjack Gold Series”.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that we have been screwed over by 32Red’s advertising department, they are still a very good casino and without doubt the best Microgaming casino. If you search online for complaints or scam reports on them, you won’t find a lot of information because they do treat their players well and they do pay out with no problems.

However, Betfair, Paddy Power and William Hill are all better options for roulette players because they all run on the superior Playtech software with more suitable table limits and have a wider range of roulette games to choose from.
